My thoughts on Facebook Places

I am a  FourSquare user and I love the specials you can unlock and the competitive nature of it. I was a bit skeptical about Facebook Places, but  Itried  it and checked in to a few places and it was cool to see where your friends were at the time.  But like everything in Facebook, I had to go back had to go back to edit my privacy settings. To view a great tutorial on this, visit to Social Wayne’s web site and adjust your settings.  I adjusted mine so friends couldn’t tag me at a place-that could be disastrous, but I digress.

Quick thoughts:

  • Facebook Places is new and will get better, but they need to offer something like “Mayorships” so that competitive nature can continue on from Foursquare.
  • Privacy is always an issue and Facebook takes pains to get it right, but I still feel you should not have to opt-out of privacy.

There are many people who will never use geo-location apps just on gp.  One friend told me, “What if I am working on something for a client and every time they see me at a location not home or at the office they know you’re not paying attention to their project.” Another one said, “I am not interested in sharing every waking moment of my life.”  Those are valid points but there are many people who are and these apps are here to stay.  Here is a video by FB that is high in production value (looks like it was shot with a Canon DSLR) and explains Places well.
